I guess I shouldn't say fail-proof, but it really has always worked for us. My two kids have probably had a dozen earaches combined and only once did I have to take one to the doctor. And that one time was when Sam was a new baby and I didn't know about this miracle cure.
Vivian was up last night with congestion and an earache. Generally all I need is a little of this Willow & Garlic Ear Oil. Admittedly, they both generally fight it, though Sam is learning to endure it for the relief that follows. Viv still screams like a banshee, not because it hurts, it's just feels weird to have oil dripped into your ear. Generally a dose or two of ear oil does the trick. But if it doesn't...
Then I turn into Mama-Medicine Woman and get out my kitchen supplies. I put about two dropper-fulls of the ear oil in a little bowl, then crush a clove of garlic and squeeze it in some cloth (I usually use our almond milk bag, I just have to wash it really well afterward! You can use anything finely woven in a pinch.). I squeeze out a few drops of the garlic juice into the bowl with the oil and then add 2-3 drops of lavender oil. Mix this all up. It's important to make it mostly oil with just a few drops of the other stuff. With the dropper add a few drops into each ear. Sometimes I just dip a Q-tip in and swab it around in their ear. Last night it wasn't until the addition of the garlic juice that Viv was able to sleep through the night. She woke up this morning with a lingering cough, but perky and back to her cheerful self.
The trick with this remedy is to catch the earache early and be consistent with the oil. Anytime I see them rubbing their ear or complaining of it hurting we add a few more drops. I also make sure to keep them extra warm. I tucked Vivi into bed last night between two rice bags.
I think I'm probably supposed to say something about how I'm not a doctor, so don't take my word for anything. And seriously, don't go sticking stuff in your kids' ears and saying I said to do it! I'm just sharing what has worked for our family time after time. This is just something we've pulled together from experience and intuition, but it works so well that I just had to share:) Earaches are awful to experience and it's even worse to hold your little ones who are suffering from that deep, internal ache and feel like you can't do anything about it. I often warm a rice bag for them to lay over their ear while the oil and garlic takes effect. This seems to be soothing too.
Do you have any fail-proof remedies you always turn to?
PS Sam "read" to her for at least an hour when she wasn't feeling well. Heart melting :)
