Happy belated Halloween! Here are Sam and Vivian as a spider (a jumping spider, says Sam) and a bee. Because Clay and I were given creative license by the commissioners of the costumes, we chose fabric that was a little funkier than your run-of-the-mill garden spider or bee.
Next year, however, if we put so much time into costumes I think we're actually going to plan on going to a few events, rather than simply knocking on three doors and calling it a night. Sam is still too young to realize that giving away the candy you collected to trick-or-treaters that come to your house isn't actually how it goes. Thankfully, due to his naivete we managed to avoid the crazy sugar rush:) Although the evening was short and lacking in the traditional candy binge, the process of creating their costumes was so satisfying. It was especially fun to have Sam be involved, so excited to see his costume evolve and to do holiday-esque things like carving a pumpkin with his dad.
Another thing I'll do next year is actually try the costume on the kid as I'm making it! Understandably, I worked on Vivian's costume while she napped, basing it on a onesie that fits her. I think I must have overstuffed it because with all that stuffing there was little room to stuff her into the costume! Perhaps a zipper in the back would've helped rather than just an over-the-head number. Ah, live and learn.
