We have a friend who's due with her first baby next month. Saturday was her baby shower and I wanted to have something handmade to give. While I didn't have time for something really handmade, you know, stiched, knitted, quilted etc. I still wanted something personal and special. One of my favorite baby gifts I've done in the past is painting onesies. It's pretty straightforward and not too time consuming, but is still really satisfying to do. It's fun to see all the colorful little onesies lined up together. And then hopefully when the new mama dresses their little one they feel loved every time they reach for a onesie that you put your personal touch on.
With all my fabric paints, brushes and crisp, new onesies laid out I set to work. I tried making an apple stamp per the instructions in Crafting Fun, and it turned out pretty cute, though I think I might need to perfect my technique a bit. It would definitely be a fun craft to do with kids on a rainy day. The ones I like the best are these animals that I made stencils for. I found the images online and cut them out, leaving the outline. Then it was simple to paint these clear, crisp silhouettes of rhinos, penguins and pelicans. I think next time I do a gift like this (which will soon; it seems like everyone I know is having babies!) I'll do them all this way so they look unified.
All wrapped up in a blue ribbon (they're having a boy) and tucked in a bag I think it looked pretty sweet. I almost gave her just the three "matching" ones and left the lion and apple out, but I'm glad I didn't because the lion was her favorite:) I put a little lion on one of Sam's night shirts awhile back and I have to admit, it is pretty cute.
