I must be the last one to realize how great this series is. Somehow I managed to graduate from childhood without ever having read them. I recently saw the whole set for only a couple bucks at a second hand store and snatched it up, thinking it was one of those family library essentials.
I usually have a book or two on the table by the nursing chair and read them exclusively during nursing time (okay, and sometimes in the bath with a bowl of popcorn...) It takes me a relatively short time to make my way through a book in quick 15 minute snatches especially books like these. I thought I might tire of it after the first book or two, but I'm totally hooked!
It helps that the stories are true and were lived by the author herself. I'm utterly fascinated with the life they lead, building their entire lives from scratch, and the joy and contentment they found in such simple things. There is a sweetness to the books and they remind me to not worry so much about all the inconsequential things that consume my thoughts, but just to focus on the important things. Their Christmases, for example, were always so simple, but so thoroughly enjoyed. It makes me recommit to my goal of simple, handmade Christmases for our family.
I've got two more books to go in the series and am still going strong. I think there's some romance about to happen! I can't wait until I have kids old enough to read these out loud to.
Have a great weekend everyone; I have a fun surprise for you next week!
