Sam and I took a trip to the library this week and brought home a stack of picture books. It's becoming clear that he's a book addict like me. One treasure we discovered is the Quiltmaker Series. I am absolutely, head-over-heels in love with the rich, detailed illustrations and the warm, cozy stories. And if you are a quiltmaker yourself, you'll swoon!
The first one we read is called The Quiltmaker's Gift. The quiltmaker creates the most beautiful quilts in the world, but they're not for sale. She gives them to people who need them. So once a quilt is completed she comes down from her mountain home and walks the cold streets of the city. When she finds some cold or lonely soul she wraps the quilt warmly around their shoulders and then sets off for home to start on the next quilt. The king of the land decides he must have one of her quilts as they are the very best, but she refuses to sell them, unless he, in turn, gives away all that he owns. It's a tall order and he naturally balks at the idea. But in the end, everyone gets their heart's desire. It's the perfect book for reading by the fire, snuggled up in your own quilt.
